John Wilson is a widely respected and internationally recognised conductor, arranger and scholar specialising in the fields of light music, jazz and music for screen. Shortlisted in 2007 for the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society’s Conductor’s Award, he is a principal conductor of the Northern Sinfonia, appearing on a regular basis with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony, Philharmonia, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, BBC Symphony and BBC Concert orchestras.
He is principal guest conductor of the RTE Concert Orchestra in Dublin and has conducted across Europe.
Making his BBC Proms debut in 2007 at the Royal Albert Hall he returned in 2009 to conduct his own orchestra in a programme celebrating 75 years of MGM musicals. An overwhelming success, the concert is now available on DVD after attracting 3.5 million viewers on the night.
Wilson returned in August last year with a highly acclaimed Rodgers and Hammerstein concert, before taking his Swingin’ Christmas show on tour. Swingin’ Christmas was broadcast on BBC2 on Christmas day and repeated on New Year’s Eve. John Wilson will be touring his first operatic piece Gilbert and Sullivan’s Ruddigore this Autumn.
